 Increasing The Personalized Donor Pool

Ezer Mizion provides life-saving services to patients facing acute health challenges, such as cancer. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for its clients, empowering them to move through their challenges with dignity and a degree of independence.

Jewish Bone Marrow Donor Registry

Ezer Mizion operates the largest Jewish Bone Marrow Donor Registry in the world. Established in 1998, the Registry has grown to almost 950,000 potential donors. Thousands of requests from transplant centers located in 48 countries around the globe have been handled by the Donor Registry. The outcomes have been amazing. The Registry has made 13,353 donor-patient stem cell matches, resulting in more than 3,000 stem cell transplants. Patients across the globe have received new life as a result of the Donor Registry. But it was not enough.

Why a Jewish Bone Marrow Donor Registry is Important

Cancer patients typically endure chemotherapy and radiation treatments, sometimes multiple cycles. These therapies kill the cancer cells, but they also kill healthy bone marrow cells, creating a new set of life-threatening circumstances. In these cases, a bone marrow transplant is the only answer, but it must come from a genetically compatible donor.

Close family members can be a match for patients, but typically no more than 30% of patients are able to locate a match within their family. However, if the donor and patient share the same ethnic background, the chance for a match increases. This is why the Jewish Bone Marrow Donor Registry is so critically important. While there is an International Bone Marrow Registry, very few donors are of Jewish ancestry.

The Jewish Bone Marrow Donor Registry was established by Ezer Mizion in 1998 to address this deficiency and increase the chances of survival for critically ill Jewish patients around the world. It is now the largest Jewish donor registry in the world.

Personalized Donor Pools

In spite of the tremendous growth of the Jewish Bone Marrow Donor Registry, it is still not meeting the need. To this end, Ezer Mizion developed a novel initiative to grow the registry. Individuals, corporations or groups can sponsor the DNA testing of a sample in the Ezer Mizion Registry. Once tested, the sample receives a tracking number which can be used to alert the sponsor when a match has been made. It is a tremendously gratifying way to know that one is making a real-life difference.

The Northern Charitable Foundation is a partner of the Jewish Bone Marrow Donor Registry. Alex and Rosa Dembitzer launched their personalized donor pool through the Foundation. Their contribution achieved early results—two lives were saved. Since then, they have doubled their personal donor pool to help save more lives of those that need a bone marrow transplant.

The Personalized Donor Pool is helping Ezer Mizion move closer to the goal of finding a match for every patient who needs a bone marrow transplant.

Sky Management Services’ Frank Janos met with state and local economic development leaders and Newmark Knight Frank at a recent luncheon held in Fayetteville, NC. “It was an informative exchange of ideas with local officials to discuss a wide variety of public and private opportunities and local initiatives for new business development”, said Janos. Newmark Knight Frank was recently selected as exclusive Broker for Sky Management’s multi-tenanted warehouse and distribution facility located at 107 Tom Starling Road in Fayetteville.

The Northern Charitable Foundation  made a pledge to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum (ASOM) located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. "Most importantly, we are extremely proud to have the opportunity to support our troops”, Janos added. The ASOM is dedicated to honoring and preserving the heroic feats of the United States Army Airborne and Special Operations troops who have contributed so much to defend our nation’s interests.

The Northern Charitable Foundation is proud to sponsor the 2018 Wheels of Love in Israel on behalf of the ALYN Hospital- Israel’s only children orthopedic rehab hospital.I have participated personally on the ride several times and have greatly enjoyed it. Also, I have visited the ALYN Hospital and have personally seen the amazing work they do for all citizens of Israel.

WHEELS OF LOVE  is the ALYN Hospital’s largest annual fundraiser. This event is so much more than just a bike ride….it is an annual reunion of old friends from around the world as well as a meet-up of new people. The annual bike ride brings together Americans, Canadians, Israelis and Europeans who are all passionate about Israel, children and cycling. The ride is a five day moving caravan of love and hope. The money raised through the ride helps offset the staggering shortfall the Hospital has because the amount reimbursed from health insurance lags far behind the actual cost of ALYN’s life changing care. The 2018 goal is to raise $3,000,000. We will reach it gift by gift;  just as the ALYN children reach their goals step by step.

The NCF is proud of its efforts to help families and patients cope with Alzheimer’s disease. Our work with The Zipporah Fried Alzheimers Center has helped thousands of families and caregivers in Israel through personal consultations with a consultant, seminars for caregivers, lectures by medical experts and workshops. The center is named after Alex Dembitzer’ grandmother that suffered from Alzheimer's for many years.

There are more than 5 million people living with Alzheimer's disease and dementia in the United States. It is estimated that Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60-80 percent of all dementia cases. Alzheimer’s kills more people than breast and prostate cancer combined. The total cost of caring for those in the United States with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias is estimated at 259 billion dollars in 2017. Alzheimer's disease is a slow, progressive disorder of the brain that results in loss of memory and other cognitive function and, eventually death.
